Captains Corner - 22/08/2021

Captain’s Corner:

So in the past seven or so days we have a fair bit to catch up on, we start at Cranborne and as well as individual runs we also have Orion Harriers leg of the Elvis league and a large contingent of 88’s that took on the Vitality big half.

We start at Cranborne camping weekend. This was my first camping weekend since Cubs and it showed. Turned up in a tent that although done the job it was not big enough for when I was in the Cubs, put in on a slope, which I found out on first night when I kept sliding into my bag a mere foot away.

Anyway on to the races, on Saturday we had the frolic, which for anyone who don’t know is a twelve hour event that you are required to do as many laps as possible of a 3.4 mile lap. We had two 88’s doing the individual, a pair and a team of four.

Nils Hollmann got in most laps, recording 8, Tracey Sheehy also ran the individual and after collecting an injury in the first lap, Tracey went on to run 6.

Andy Beazeley and Jenny O'Hanlon went in the pairs and ran 9 as a team. Won’t say you won that battle but Andy was in the pub before Jenny (just saying).

The team of four consisting of Timi Veerasamy, Lorraine Moor Hilton, Emma O'Shea and Kresh Veerasamy completed 12 laps in total, all completing three laps each.

Into the afternoon the kids took on a just over 3k route, Ryder came in second overall. We had great runs for Amelia and Evie and the a very tired Kara came in asleep on Jame’s shoulder with Mum and Nana running in support. To be fair it was an highlight seeing so many youngsters giving their all, it was great.

On Sunday we had the 10k and half marathon. First off were the half marathoners. Gary Cardnell came just ahead of Rahana Islam in a time of 2:38:00 and 2:38:30 respectively. Now some may just be looking at the times but this course was no easy half marathon. The elevation over the course was around 1500 feet. The views were absolutely stunning. I spent more time hopping side to side trying to find which track was best than going forwards! After Gary and Rahana came Emma Dudman (who was seeing pigs where no one else was) in a time of 2:51:45 and followed by all I can say is an upbeat Louise Chappell in a time of 2:56:40 as she passed me as I suffered from around mile nine and struggled in on a time of 2:57:56 (disappointed but realised I didn’t prepare well by not eating the previous day, but on reflection I done it and knew where I got it wrong), unlike Beverley Eagles who didn’t know where she went wrong until she couldn’t see any more directions/runners or marshals and went for an extra mile out and mile return to course on an already extended course. Bev completed over 16 miles in a time of 3:21:41, great running Bev.

The 10k runners where timed to come in around the same time and we had Tracey Sheehy coming in a time of 54:11 and Tracey achieved 3rd female overall . Nills 1:01:04, Andy came in a time of 1:13:38, Jenny 1:10:38, Emma 1:20:38, Lorraine 1:15:01, Julie Cardnell and Kirsty Hannan came in next on 1:37:36 with Sam Veerasamy on 1:38:47 (great running Sam). Well done everyone, it was a great weekend !!Jason Manning took on the Lea Valley half marathon and completed it in 2 hours 16 mins. Well done mateThis weekend saw Orion Harriers host the fifth race in this years Elvis series at Chingford. The 88’s had a smaller team than usual but as we took to the start line already for the off, we saw a red and white blur sprinting from the car park. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s the 88 legend Michael Pegnall starting from the car park. First home for the 88’s was Nils in a time of 41:55 for this five mile race. Rahana came in next for the 88’s in 43:48, I then came in on 46:06, Jason Manning in on 48:13, Nat Booth next on 48:13followed by Lynton Fairman 48:28 on and Louise on 48:33, and Timi bringing home the 88’s. Well done all those who took part especially those who then headed to the big half on Sunday. Today saw a large group of 88’s wearing the Red and White take in the Vitality Big Half. Seems like a fair few of the 88’s had PB’s or some times to be proud of after a long lay off. A great time posted by Peter Salmon of 1:27:32 (absolutely flying Pete ), Rosina Salmon on 2:03, Lynton 2:07:16, Lorraine 2:29:15, Simon Childs 2:15:21 (great effort Simon), Tracey 2:15, Timi 2:15, Andy 2:09, Jenny 2:29, Emma 2:29 (guessing Emma ran with Lorraine and Jenny), Louise 2:09, Tom 1:46, Sara 2:44, Melissa Tuppen Embery 2:29 and Sonya Byers 2:26. Grace Kelly 2:32.I’m sorry about times as website not always showing, so I have taken from site or Strava when I could. Please let me know times and also if I’ve missed anyone as didn’t have a list and just going through who I think done it.I know it was a while ago but well done also to Jacqui Elliott, Natalie Summers and Jason who recently completed the London Landmarks Half Marathon.Natalie also completed 33 miles in circles around Hog Hill, no mean feat at all, great going Nat𝙎𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙮 Andrew Wright, take it for granted as those marathons just keep rolling in. A special mention to the man on 77 completed marathons. And to him and Mick on finding anywhere they can put them medals. Great acheivement fella𝘼𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙮 Pebbles Wyard and Gary completed the London Triathlon another great effort by both
